We had two families (ages 16, 15, 12 and 11) go to Vietnam for the first time in April 2018. We worked with Kate To from the agency for about 9 months prior to our travel. Kate helped us figure out what we wanted to do and pulled together an amazing itinerary that included hotels, restaurants, tours, drivers and guides all at a very reasonable price (I priced it out independently and she was under what I got). I usually never use travel agencies as I like to think of myself as a "do-it-yourself" kind of person, but read the positive reviews here and given the language differences and the children traveling thought it would be a good idea.
Before the trip
Kate was great to work with trying to figure out what we wanted to do and how we wanted to pace our vacation. She was able to secure in-country flights for us from Hanoi to Danang as well as secure paperwork for our visa. She was extremely communicative over email responding usually within 24 hours. She kept within our budget and worked to prioritize what we felt was important.
Upon arrival
Please note when you land in Hanoi even though you may have a letter, you still need to give the letter and your visa photos to the window in the back of the immigration room. Please note it takes a while to process and you will have to pay in cash (US dollars was all I saw)
Hanoi
We arrived in Hanoi greeted by our amazing tour guide Lam and our driver. Lam was warm and inviting and took us directly to our very nice van. We were taken to the Hotel Delano in the Old Quarter to check in. Our rooms were very nice just a little small, but very manageable. We had the rest of the day to tour around on our own. Hanoi is an amazing and incredibly bustling city. There were motorbikes going in all directions and it was a lot to take in. Once we got a bit more confident on the street we walked around a bit, grabbed some dinner and headed back to the hotel. The next morning we were greeted by Lam and our driver and taken around for a tour. Some of the highlights included: The Temple of Literature, Museum of Ethnology, beautiful luncheon with Vietnamese food, Hanoi Hilton and the Water Puppet show. Lam then took us on what was probably the highlight of our time in Hanoi – the street food tour. He started out introducing everyone to “egg coffee” at a place that was way off the beaten path and the entire group loved it. In fact, we went back to that place when we came back through Hanoi at the end of our trip. We also had traditional Vietnamese dumpling and papaya salad while sitting on the little chairs, had springs rolls off the street, authentic beef pho and some dessert. We were exhausted when we got back to the hotel, but it was a great day.
Ha Long
The next day we met Lam and left for our boat tour in Ha Long Bay. Unfortunately the road to Ha Long Bay is quite long (about 4 hours – we are told a new highway will be opened soon cutting the time down to 2 hours). We stopped along the way at a Vietnamese rest area (shopping, café and restrooms) along with at a pearl factory before we made it to the boat. We were on the Dragon Legend 2 for our 2 day, 1 night cruise. The staff (especially JD) were amazing with their hospitality. The cruise ship is really beautiful with the best and largest rooms I have ever seen on a cruise ship. We had a magical time cruising in Ha Long Bay, going kayaking, jumping off the boat, and practicing Tai Chi in the morning and hiking the next day. Our only regret was not doing the 3 day/2 night option. Ha Long Bay was the highlight of our trip and we wished we could have had one more day there.
Hoi An
After being picked up Lam in the van, we were transported back to Hanoi to catch our flight to Danang. Due to timing, we ended up having about 3 hours at the airport. Lam said his goodbyes to us and left and then felt so bad he came back and made sure we were all OK and got the best service. Lam and his kindness were a highlight of our trip (see our photo with Lam).
We made it to Hoi An in the evening and were met by Viet and our new driver. Viet was very nice and gave us an explanation of that region while we made our way to our hotel. We arrived at the Palm Garden Resort in the evening and checked into our nice large rooms.
The next morning Viet picked us up for a tour day at My Son and downtown Hoi An. This was a tough day for our families as I think jet lag was starting to really get us and the kids had seen the beach and the pool and weren’t into anymore touring. We went to My Son and Viet gave some good information about the historic site and then went into downtown Hoi An for a great lunch. The best thing about having the lunches arranged (in my humble opinion) is that we were able to try so many different things and not have to worry about cost or not knowing what to order. Kate did a great job selecting traditional and local items. After lunch our team was tired and we cut our tour a little short but Viet was more than accommodating to us switching up the schedule.
The next day we were able to spend at the beach and the pool and also enjoy some of the spa services at the hotel (very reasonable by California standards). Everyone had a great time and the adults were able to go into Hoi An for an evening meal at the Cargo Club (very popular with tourists, kind of like a Cheesecake factory menu..wasn’t our favorite meal).
The next day over half the group went on a great bike tour with Viet that included a boat ride, making noodles, weaving and a delicious lunch. We all came back to the hotel and tried a great restaurant across the street called An Gia.
The next morning the driver picked us up to go to the airport where we returned to Hanoi for one last day of shopping and last minute sightseeing.
We had a wonderful time and would really like to thank Kate, Lam and Viet for showing us their beautiful country. We hope to be able to visit again someday.
